  1. Would you mind sharing your hamburger recipe ? Also, in a previous post, you mentioned you were planning a few different porridges for your weekly breakfasts. I would love to have a few ideas to vary from our soaked oatmeal !

    1. We usually have oatmeal, made from rolled oats. My kids like it when I get out lots of different toppings and let them choose. But I often make apple pie oatmeal, with apple pie spices and chopped apples. Then there is cream of wheat or grits which we have less frequently, or overnight steel-cut oats. I'll share one more porridge recipe plus my black bean burgers below. You could pan-fry the burgers instead of baking if you prefer. They hold together better that way.

      Black bean burgers
      2 cans black beans, drained and rinsed
      1 teaspoon salt
      1 teaspoon onion powder
      1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
      1/2 teaspoon paprika
      1/4 teaspoon red pepper flakes
      1 1/2 teaspoons liquid smoke
      2 tablespoons ground flaxseed + 1/3 cup water
      1 1/2 cups bread crumbs

      Preheat oven to 350°F. Mash beans with seasonings and flax. Stir in breadcrumbs until mixture holds together. Form into 8 patties. Bake 20–30 minutes on a parchment-covered baking sheet, turning once. Brush with barbecue sauce halfway through if desired.

      Makes 8

      Total time: 40 minutes

      Wheat and oat porridge
      1 1/4 cups cooked wheat berries
      1 1/4 cups rolled oats
      2 1/2 cups water
      pinch salt
      1/2 cup raisins
      1/2 cup sliced almonds
      1 tablespoon brown sugar
      1 teaspoon cinnamon

      Combine all ingredients and simmer until oats are soft.

      Serves 4
