Make your own "refried" beans

Once you have cooked and frozen your own beans (read how to here), you can do anything with them you would normally do with canned beans.

Here's one more thing you can do with them: mash them up and pretend they're refried beans. I promise they're every bit as tasty as canned, and making them is nearly as easy as opening a can. I'm not a big fan of refried beans, but I would eat these for lunch any day!

I used ours to make quesadillas, along with some canned green chiles and grated cheese. We had enough beans for four quesadillas.

"Refried" beans

1 can beans, drained, black or pinto (or 1 3/4 cups cooked beans, thawed if frozen)
salsa (about 3 tablespoons)
onion powder (about 1/8 teaspoon)
salt to taste

Mash everything together with a potato masher. Quantities are more a matter of texture and taste than measurement.

  1. I've decided I like pink beans best for homemade "refried" beans. I pressure cook pink beans with an onion and whole cumin seeds, throw the whole mess through my meat grinder and then add a little butter. SO good.
