A comb and a brush and a bowlful of mush


Red Chief must remember our Poky Little Puppy dessert week, because yesterday he requested "a bowlful of mush", referring to one of his newest favorite books, Goodnight Moon. He told me, "It's so yummy, mommy," even though he'd never had it before.

This morning I whipped up a batch of cornmeal mush for breakfast. I used to make this often when we were on our $25-a-week grocery budget.


Cornmeal Mush

2 cups water, divided
1/2 cup cornmeal
1/8 teaspoon salt

Bring 1 1/2 cups water and salt to a boil. Mix the cornmeal and remaining 1/2 cup of water in a small bowl. Reduce heat and add cornmeal mixture very slowly to boiling water, stirring constantly. If it looks lumpy, use a whisk. Cook until thick, just a minute or two. Serve with honey, brown sugar, or molasses, and milk if you like. Serves 2.

  1. oh once i saw the title, i knew immediately what book you were referring to! there was a time when i had that book memorized... very handy for "reading a story" in the utter darkness;)

    so did red chief like his mush?

  2. Sounds pretty good, but I'm the one that eats Cream of Wheat several times a week.

  3. He says he liked it, but he didn't eat much. Probably because he'd already had a pre-breakfast snack in the car while we took Daddy to work.

  4. My little boy loves that book. There is just something so soothing about that book just before bed.

    That is fun to make the books come to life.

I wonder if the Princess Nagger will like this - she's already turned her nose up at oatmeal and cream of wheat (even when I tried to pass it off as 'porridge' since she loves the Three Bears...*grin!*) I'm certainly going to give it a try - she loves corn bread so maybe there's hope! :) Thanks for the recipe! :)
